Dr. Pitotti & others respond to widespread misinformation regarding the safety of the influenza vaccine
An article published at The Bump addresses a growing concern among pregnant women that the flu shot may lead to miscarriage, autism and pregnancy complications. Outside of a few special circumstances, pregnant women can and should receive a flu shot to guard against contracting influenza during pregnancy.
When is the right time for a pregnant woman to receive the shot? CU’s Dr. Jennifer Pitotti says the flu vaccine is considered safe at any point in pregnancy but data is more limited for shots received during the first trimester, adding, “The potential risk of first trimester vaccination must be weighed against the significant known risks of having the flu while pregnant.”
